Why learn in a manual?

The short version: a manual licence lets you drive everything, and an automatic licence does not. If you pass in an automatic you are restricted to automatic cars permanently, unless you come back and take a second test in a manual later.

That matters more than most learners expect. It narrows what you can buy, what you can borrow, what you can hire on holiday, and what you can drive at work. Plenty of trades, delivery roles and care jobs still run manual vehicles, and a manual licence keeps those doors open.

Manual does take longer to learn. Clutch control, gear changes and hill starts are genuinely harder than pressing one pedal. But that difficulty is front loaded: once it clicks, it stays clicked, and you spend the rest of your driving life with more options.

What a manual lesson with us looks like

Lessons are one to one and structured around where you actually are, not a fixed syllabus. Early on that means quiet roads and a lot of clutch work. Later it means building up through busier junctions, faster roads, and eventually the roads around Rhyl test centre.

Our base in Dyserth is genuinely useful for manual learners. The village sits at the foot of the Clwydian hills, so there are real gradients within a couple of minutes of the car. Hill starts are the thing that unsettles most manual learners on test day, and being able to practise them repeatedly rather than once before your test makes a difference.

Questions

Manual driving lessons: common questions

How much are manual driving lessons in Prestatyn and Rhyl?

SMS Driving School charges £35 per hour for manual driving lessons, currently reduced from £40. A block of ten hours is £340, which works out at £34 per hour. Door to door pickup is included across all 11 areas we cover.

Is it better to learn in a manual or an automatic?

A manual licence lets you drive both manual and automatic cars. An automatic licence only lets you drive automatics, which limits your choice of car for life. Manual takes longer to learn because of the clutch and gears, but it is currently cheaper per hour with SMS Driving School and it leaves your options open.

How many manual lessons will I need?

DVSA figures suggest most learners need around 45 hours of professional tuition plus around 22 hours of private practice. Manual usually takes a little longer than automatic because of clutch control and gear changes. We will give you an honest view as your lessons progress rather than selling you hours you do not need.

Who teaches manual lessons at SMS Driving School?

Simon Vicary and Gwyn Davies both teach manual tuition. Simon founded the school in 2005. Both cover the full area from Talacre and Gronant in the east through to Abergele in the west.

Can I switch from automatic to manual lessons?

Yes. Some pupils start in an automatic to build road confidence and then move across to manual once the road craft is there. Call 07966 934232 and we will talk through whether that makes sense for you.
