What to take with you
You must take:
- Your UK provisional driving licence
- A car that meets the DVSA rules, usually your instructor's
You do not need your theory test pass certificate. The examiner checks your theory pass on their own system before the test starts.
If you turn up without the right documents your test is cancelled and you do not get the fee back. If you have lost your licence, a replacement can take up to 15 working days, so rearrange the test rather than hoping it arrives.
The five parts of the test
The test is identical whether you drive a manual or an automatic. It takes around 40 minutes, or around 70 minutes for an extended test taken after a driving ban.
Preparing for the roads around Rhyl
DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, so nobody can tell you exactly where you will be taken. Any website claiming to list the current Rhyl routes is guessing.
What genuinely works is volume and variety on the roads around the centre. Driving the same junctions in quiet morning traffic, in summer seafront congestion and in poor weather is what turns a road from something you memorised into something you can read. That is the difference examiners are actually assessing.
Our pupils across all eleven areas we cover test at Rhyl, so lessons in the run up to a test normally include regular time on these roads regardless of which town you are picked up from.
If it does not go your way
A fail is not a verdict on whether you can drive, it is a snapshot of one 40 minute drive. Read the marking sheet with your instructor, work on what actually came up, and book again. Plenty of very good drivers needed two attempts.

What is the eyesight check?
You read a number plate from 20 metres for a new style plate, or 20.5 metres for an old style plate. If you fail the eyesight check the test ends there and is recorded as a fail, so wear your glasses or lenses if you need them.
Can I see the Rhyl test routes in advance?
No. DVSA stopped publishing official test routes, so any site claiming to list the exact current routes is guessing. What genuinely helps is repeated practice on the roads around the test centre in different traffic and weather conditions.
Can I use my own car for the test?
Yes, if it meets the DVSA rules on insurance, MOT, roadworthiness and fitted mirrors, and it has no warning lights showing. Most learners use their instructor's car because it is already set up correctly and they are used to it.
